Commencement Speaker

Esteemed dignitaries, distinguished guests, members of the faculty, graduating students, parents and guardians, namaskar and a very good afternoon to all of you. I am delighted to join you today as we gather to celebrate the 14th commencement exercises for the Jonelta Foundation School of Medicine. This day is a celebration of the fulfillment of dreams and the promise of a bright future of the graduating students.

Today marks a significant milestone in their lives, a culmination of years of dedication, perseverance and hard work. Each one of you has embarked on a unique journey, one that has required not only intellectual rigor but also emotional resilience. You have faced challenges, overcome obstacles and emerged stronger, ready to take on the responsibilities that lie ahead.

I am particularly delighted to note that this event coincides with the celebration of the 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and the Philippines. In November 1949, our two nations led the foundation of a strong friendship built on shared values, mutual respect and a deep appreciation for each other's traditions and culture. Over the past seven and a half decades, we have strengthened our bonds through multifaceted cooperation, including in the field of education, which is vital for the development of our societies.

Today, as we celebrate your achievements, we also recognize the importance of the medical profession in our society. The theme of this year's commencement, “Nurturing Responsive Physicians to Healthcare Delivery as Helpers of God”, resonates deeply with a sense of what it means to be a physician. You are entering a field that is both noble and challenging, one that demands not only knowledge and skill but also compassion and integrity.

As you embark on this journey, I urge you to embrace the values of integrity and empathy. These principles will serve as your compass as you navigate the complexities of healthcare. Remember that medicine is not just about treating diseases, it is about caring for people. Each patient you encounter will come with their own story, their own struggles and their own hopes. Approach each interaction with an open heart and a willingness to listen. Your ability to connect with your patients will be as important as your medical knowledge.

In this era of rapid technological advancement, the landscape of medicine is evolving at an unprecedented pace. As future physicians, you will be at the forefront of these changes. Embrace lifelong learning, stay curious and open-minded. The knowledge you acquire today will serve as a foundation, but it is your commitment to continuous learning and education that will enable you to provide the best care possible. Moreover, I encourage you to be advocates for health in your communities.

The role of a physician extends beyond the clinic or hospital. It encompasses a responsibility to educate and empower individuals about their health. Use your knowledge to promote wellness, prevent diseases and advocate for policies that improve healthcare access for all. Your voice can be a powerful tool for change, and I urge you to use it wisely.

I would also like to take a moment to acknowledge the unwavering support of your teachers, mentors, your families and friends.I am sure that encouragement and sacrifices have played an integral role in your success.

Today, as you celebrate your achievements, remember to express your gratitude to those who have stood by you throughout this journey. They have been your pillars of strength, and their belief in you has undoubtedly strengthened your determination. The road ahead for you is filled with opportunities to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

In closing, I extend my deep gratitude to the University of Perpetual Health System Dalta, for inviting me to this event. I congratulate each and every one of you for your hard work and dedication in reaching this milestone. May you be guided by the principles of compassion and service, and may you find joy and fulfillment in your calling as responsive physicians and helpers of God.

Once again, congratulations to all graduating students.

Thank you. Maraming Salamat.
